What Would You Do Differently?

‘The past is a foreign country, they do things differently there.’

One of my favourite lines – the very first one in L. P. Hartley’s The Go Between

I don’t tend to have regrets, as such, because I think that all my experience—good and bad—help to shape who I am today…and I like who I am. As RuPaul says: ‘If you don’t love yourself, how the hell you gon’ love somebody else?’

Of course, that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few people I could have done without encountering, but that can’t be helped and can’t be stopped…I’m sure there are a great deal more wasters and ne’er-do-wells I’m yet to meet. Take a wide swerve or cut them out and move on.

While regretting things is a massive waste of time and energy, I do sometimes wonder what my life would be like had I chosen differently, walked a different route. Could have been infinitely worse or so much better, but everything that has gone before has been for a reason. Maybe it was all meant to be and my path has already been chosen.

No matter whether I am the master of my own destiny or my path has already been set, I’ll take it as it comes and relish it all.

What about you?
